The Bullet--2009 June Newsletter

SPRING/SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2009

Hello to all members and friends!  Spring is here, and everything is growing, and that includes the Order of Combat-USA!

Last year was a good one for us, with several noteworthy Black Belts, Masters, and even Grandmasters of other systems joining with us in the Order.  I would particularly like to mention Grandmaster Hank Williams, and Masters Jeff Horton, and Shawn Sizemore.

These gentlemen have expressed their enthusiasm for “Americanizing” the study of Martial Arts.

Master Brian Cook, of Roanoke, is preparing a class in his area!  He will also be working on membership in the “Wolf Lodge”

Master Cliff Thompson has sent in several student (under belt) memberships, and is getting ready for his seasonal classes up in NJ.  Master Thompson provides excellent training in the Burlington/Mount Holly, NJ area.  His class is the old hardcore outdoor class we used to love so well.  Cost is dirt cheap, since he trains in the dirt (grass usually) and is a great outdoor activity for shaping up and enhancing your martial arts/self defense skills.  Tell your friends about this class.  Call him at 609.227.3763 for info.

We are thinking of what’s in store for us this summer.

The Order was originally founded on the 4th of July, back in the 70’s.  Therefore, there will be a JULY 4th Picnic and Awards Ceremony.

Events of the Day (July 4th):

Saturday morning () -  Drill practice and flage ceremonies at the Eagle Lodge in Concord, Virginia.

There will be a moment of silence in memory of the late Grandmaster Bethel and Wayne Chappell, one of our oldest members and one of our youngest.  They are in good company with one another.

Later Saturday morning -- Participating in the Concord 4th of July Parade.  We will need a couple of Pick Up trucks for this.

After the parade --Game time. Karate students needing refresher work will be given extra time.

Last -- Awards Ceremony and picnic lunch with parents and families. Please bring a dish and come eat with us.

Sergeant Major Darbro expects to attend!

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Don’t forget the CoventryVirginiaCommonwealth Games……this year it’s on Saturday, July 18, in Salem, Virginia.  OUT OF STATE MEMBERS TAKE NOTICE- Separate Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals are given to out of state competitors. Come on down!

This competition is hosted and managed by the Order of Combat, with Master Calvin Green, our Wu Li Kempo Master/Professor acting as tournament coordinator.  He has taken his personal time to make this event one of the best in Virginia, we think it is the best, and it is the Official Virginia Commonwealth Karate Championship!  We must all plan to attend, either as competitors, or as volunteers.  It is our main event of the year.  We will be giving out Commonwealth Championship Belts sponsored by the Order also!

Any out of area members can stay at Grandmaster Lewis’s Training Center Friday and Saturday nights, if necessary, to save on hotel/motel bills. There are three inexpensive motels right in Appomattox, if needed.  Roanoke also has reduced rate motels in the area.

ID cards and business cards – This year we will have ID cards made for 2009 – 2010 Members.  Pictures can be added if you send me a digitized photo to jalcombat@msn.com.  You can also mail a photo to our address, and I can have it scanned in. The ID cards and a Membership Certificate is for basic Members.  You are still eligible to send a picture ID for your new card if you have already paid this year’s donation.

Technical skill does not depend on knowing the name of something in a foreign language.  Martial discipline is taught very well in the US military, without the trappings of foreign flags or mannerisms.  Remember, “martial” means “military”. There is no mystical power conferred upon a martial artist, it is your own physical and mental development as a result of study and practice that allows you to be what you want to be.

The underlying purpose of training in the martial arts is to develop character!

COMMUNICATING!

Give us a call or an email letting Grandmaster Lewis know if you are planning to attend our events or NOT!  Grandmaster Lewis needs to know in advance which members or families will be attending the events.

ATTENTION

THOSE NOT JOINING FOR THE CURRENT YEAR DROPPED FROM THE ROLES.                           See below:   HONOR POLICY

1.      It will be the policy starting in 2009 for those who are not keeping current.

2.      Those persons who are not current, please do not refer to your selves as “Members of the Order.”  Say “you used to be a member of the Order”.

3.      Those persons not current, and subsequently dropped from the roles, please do not claim to have a particular martial arts rank from the Order of Combat, BuDoKwan, The American Order of Combat, or the Order of Combat-USA.  Say, “I used to be a Black Belt/Master/Red Belt, etc.”  (This does not apply to “Honorary Members”)

4.      Honestly, those who claim rank, credentials, or affiliation with our organization falsely are acquiring money under false pretenses.  “This is fraud”.  Representing yourself as a registered Black Belt or Instructor when you have no credentials is dishonest, and could cost you a fine or imprisonment.  It certainly could result in a civil action for many legitimate reasons.  Do the honest thing and register.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DIRECTOR AND BOARD MEMBERS ALSO MAKE THEIR DONATION EVERY YEAR TO KEEP THE ORDER GOING!
